Animal Stories: Pete

“Pete” the Pileated Woodpecker

On September 29, 2020, Solitudes admitted a beautiful Pileated Woodpecker which had been recued south of Huntsville, Ontario. The bird was discovered the previous day near the rescuers’ home, clinging onto the side of a small tree in the frigid, pouring rain. “Pete,” named by his rescuers, was placed into a warm, cozy cardboard box and spent his first night in their home. An examination at Solitudes the next day revealed a head concussion, likely the result of window collision.

We are very pleased to report that “Pete” recovered nicely and was released back to his home. This release was extra special due to the fact that “Pete” was released by the folks who originally rescued him. It was heart-warming to witness others, touched by the same joy we experience, when a creature returns to the wild!
